Language is, of course a necessary factor of any story. Without Language, an author could not tell the story. The author usually uses a combination of these two languages. Together, these languages characterize the author’s style. Literal language means exactly what is says, literal. It employs the primary meaning of a term or expression. It is actual, obvious, and free from exaggeration. An example of this would be: The girl baked the cake. Figurative language is imaginative, not literal. Apart from the fact that this quotation itself contains a number of similes, the imp ortance lies in the feeling that is conveyed. Think of the difference between these two sentences: 1. Thoughts are very important. 2. Thoughts, just mere thoughts, are as powerful as electric batteries, as good for one as sunlight is, or as bad for one as poison. Here are a few more examples of similes: * â€Å"My love is like a red, red rose.† (Robert Burns) * Life is sometimes like a circus. * As quiet as a mouse; as busy as a bee. * Life is like an onion. Auden Another type of figurative language is when a writer using a metaphor. A metaphor is a comparison between two dissimilar objects, usually implied. The comparison is not introduces by like or as, though is is common in metaphors. Metaphor comes from two Greek words: Meta means â€Å"with,† â€Å"after,† or â€Å"beyond,† and phorein means â€Å"to carry.† So a metaphor carries another meaning with the original or carries the original meanings beyond into a new meaning.
